Race Point Lighthouse, located in Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod has a wonderful history that goes back to 1816. It is located about 3 miles north of the parking area at Race Point Beach. Without a permit and a 4 wheel drive vehicle my access had to be by walking the beach. The trip was by no means easy, as the sand was soft with no area of compressed sand to walk in. Also, a strong headwind of 25 mph was working against me, at least on the way to the light. It gave me a real respect for the kids who once walked this route every Monday through Friday in order to attend school, before the 1930s.

For this image I used a Photoshop 'plug-in' filter made by a 3rd party and the filter is called "impasto". The effect must be 'layered' in and partially transparent in order to get both brush strokes as well as detail. If the filter is used at 100% the effect is far too extreme so layering with a more subtle effect is essential. I also enhanced the drama of the scene by using a sky background that I'd shot at a different location.
